Five questions to ask before starting a digital project

A little thinking at the start can prevent a great deal of costly complexity later.

Who is this for?

Be specific about the people using the system. An employee, customer, manager and administrator may each need very different views.

What should change?

Describe a measurable improvement in plain language. For example, producing a quotation more consistently or making it easier to enquire about a service.

What already exists?

Before building, review the current tools and the information they hold. Integration or simplification may be more valuable than replacing everything.

What is essential for launch?

Separate the core workflow from enhancements that can wait. A small, reliable first release is often the safest starting point.

Who will maintain it?

Agree how content, support, security updates and future improvements will be handled. Building for change should begin at the design stage.
